Workshops at The 6th Annual Arizona Burlesque Festival
The Arizona Burlesque Festival is proud to bring you a variety of classes from this year's amazing Feature Performer Zyra Lee Vanity and Headliner Kitty von Quim!
All classes will be held at in the Pima Community College West campus Dance Studio.
10:00am-10:50am - Whining 101: Mixing Caribbean Dance & Burlesque (50 min, $20)
Zyra Lee Vanity has been mixing elements of Afro-Caribbean dance styles into her neo and classic burlesque numbers for the past 5 years. Her blend of styles has gained her international recognition & awards. Inspired by her Jamaican heritage, Zyra has mastered the art of whining while teasing.
In this 101 workshop, learn how to whine and grind, jump & wave and other Caribbean dance styles. Zyra will teach you the basics of various Caribbean dance moves and then show you how to work them smoothly into burlesque routines.
This class is designed for those with limited dance experience and involves beginner level choreography. Bring heels, comfortable clothing & a bottle of water!
11:00am-11:50am - Traplesque (50 min, $20)
Known as Torontos Urban Desire and Canadas traplesque seductress, Zyra often uses elements of classic costuming and classic movement against urban trap music to create dynamic, edgy and fun neo acts. Dancing to trap music is all about attitude, saying F U! to respectability politics, unapologetically living, confidence and having fun! In this class Zyra will teach you how to own all of that as well as do the burlesque basics (such as bumping and grinding), but to trap music! This class is choreography based and is designed to help you bring out your inner bad and bougie traplesque goddess.
Learn how to move comfortably to trap music while still teasing. Bring a bottle of water & comfortable clothing!
12:00pm-12:50pm - Baring It All: Bringing Heart to Performance (50 min)$20
How do performers draw in an audience with a single glance? How do you fill up a stage without all of the props? This movement class incorporates exercises to detail and organize your burlesque performances, while offering your fullest self on stage. For the first half of class we will review techniques to flesh out how to maximize your impact while minimizing your movement. The second half of class will be dedicated to workshopping a number that you would like to shine brighter than your rhinestones!
1:00pm-1:50pm - Are You My (Drag) Mother? (50 min,$20)
This interactive lecture offers an abbreviated history to drag family and famous drag houses, while also offering some time to self-reflect on who is in your own. How do you build your network? Who are the people that offer critical feedback, as well as enough care about you to tell you what you may not be ready to hear? But most importantly, who wont let you into the club with that tore-down wig? Spend some time with Kitty Von Quim from the House of Famous, where Nice is the New Fierce.
